I know it’s not easy timing or officiating a race but I felt that the runners today in the Race for Hope should not have been punished for an organizational error. I have organized and run races before and felt that individuals should have noted their places through some investigation and awarded the place based on the place/time/rate. The race was not that big to have accomplished this. Thanks for your help.
Hi Chuck,
We of course timed everyone regardless of the course/distance completed.
I know that the race director feels bad that the situation even occurred. As was probably obvious, she and her fellow volunteers had spent countless hours of preparation to provide participants with a great experience and this obviously tarnished the outcome.
I know that she plans to send a special participant medal along with an apology to each of those who took the alternate path home. Many of those runners would in fact have placed overall or in their age group. Of course the maps were distributed and ultimately two different courses were run. Of course nobody was trying to take a shorter path home, it was just a mistake that occurred.
While the weather was not ideal today, I was impressed with the effort and attitude of those involved.
I traveled from Danville to run in the 10k. I thought it was a big hit! It’s unfortunate that some of the runners got lead off of the course, but it happens. After all, this was their first time putting on a race. Job well done to all of the volunteers and people that organized the race!
Also, is there any way that you can post OVERALL results? Thank you!
Knowing the course is the responsibility of the runners. It’s unfortunate that this happened but in the end it is the runners responsibility to run the correct course regardless of where the officials are or aren’t.
With that said…..the lack of professionalism the race officials showed at the finish line was unbelievable. I’ve been running 5k’s for 30 years and they way the officials acted at the finish line was disgusting. Total lack of professionalism and then they tried to justify the runners cutting the course. The way they spoke to me and allowed some 15 punk kid wearing a BBCHS sweatshirt to speak to me was totally out of line. I will not be involved in this race next year nor will I have any positive comments in regards to the race today.
Yes Dustin,
Here you go:

My one recommendation for the future would be to post mile markers (like a yard sign) for those who want to pace themselves accordingly. I had a hard time knowing exactly how far along I was with my time.
Otherwise, it was a great race!
Thank you for your comments! We had volunteers with timers along the mile markers, but we’ll be sure to make them loud and clear with signs next year. Thank you for your input – I really appreciate it!
I was one of the 10 runners who missed the turn during the 10K. First of all I would like to thank everyone involved for putting on a great race and updating an overall listing with us included. I was amazed at how well the 99.999% of the course was covered by corner workers, I didn’t count, but there were alot of turns and they were manned by friendly volenteers, who cheered me on. I know there was one corner that had a slight mishap and it was rectified quickly, as only a small group of runners were affected, it was 10 of the top 14 finishers who basically followed the trail back to the start without direction at the breifly unmanned corner. I heard all my mile split times called out as well as my 5K time. One of the benefits of not wearing music… The water stations were well spaced and well manned. All and all I rate the event an “A” and a “will do” again next year…
